Would you allow your children to visit a friend's house where guns were kept?
My husband and I keep rifles and two hand guns that are always out of our children's reach and out of sight. The rifles and one of the hand guns are also locked in a safe, but we do keep one pistol on the bookcase in our bedroom on the far top shelf.
Would you allow your children to visit a friend's home where guns are kept as long as they are locked up or at least out of reach?
The hand guns we have are for home defense and the rifles are for hunting. They are always put up and never taken out unless we go hunting or if my husband decides to go the shooting range.
I would always let the parents know we kept guns. It's not something we are ashamed of and it's something I feel any parent who's child stays in my home has a right to know.
It sounds like you and your husband are responsible gun owners. I would have no problem letting my child come to the home of a person as responsible as you are. People get scared about gun accidents, but as pointed out in the book Freakonomics, more children are killed in swimming pool accidents than by gun accidents.
